Psalm 63:7 Because you have been my help, therefore in the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.

When it comes to the help of the Lord, often we think we need to do something in order to be deserving of His help.

But the truth is the opposite. It’s when you stop trying to be deserving, that’s when you will see the Lord’s help coming through every time.

This is called the grace of God.

Over the years I’ve had many people ask me for prayer about a situation they have found themselves in. As I talk through the situation a little, it doesn’t take too long to realize that the mess the person is in is often their own doing. They will even say “I’m not sure God will answer my prayer right now because I’ve gotten myself into this mess”. It’s as though they think they have to get themselves out of it, and then they can pray to God.

But that defeats the purpose of prayer!

The heart of God is: When we actually deserve the punishment and not the blessing, that's when we are most positioned to receive the Lord’s grace!

Another way of saying this is: when we stop trying to be deserving of God’s help, that’s when we find God moving to be our Saviour – our Helper, Redeemer, Healer, and Provider.

Many people have been raised on a diet of “God helps those who help themselves”. It sounds nice and catchy doesn’t it – but it is a lie of the devil. It’s simply not true and definitely not in the Bible.

God does not help those who help themselves – He helps those who cannot help themselves. He helps the helpless; He helps those who are dependent upon Him; He helps those who look to Him as their source of help to their problem!

Here are a few questions to help you see this...

  • Did you waste your years at school or university? – God is there to help you.
  • Did you lose your job through your own doing? – God is there to help you.
  • Were you careless with money, possessions, and resources? – God is there to help you.
  • Have you ruined past relationships? – God is there to help you.
  • Do you struggle with temptations/addictions because of a past carefree lifestyle - God is there to help you.

If you will just come before the Lord, acknowledge that you need His grace and His help – you will see His mercies which endure forever, coming in wave after wave into your life!

The Bible says, So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most (Hebrews 4:16).

God has been waiting for you to come before Him with a heart of surrender that says, “I’m here to be fully dependent on Your help”.

Now you will see His Almighty power and deliverance.
