John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
The grace and truth that comes from Jesus is what will transform you, it’s what the Holy Spirit acts upon to bring transformation into your life. When you walk in grace and are growing in the knowledge of God’s Word – you will see your life change.
In the Old Testament God commanded Moses in Leviticus 2:11:
“No grain offering which you bring to the Lord shall be made with leaven (yeast), for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering to the Lord made by fire.”
There is a reason why God did not want any leaven in that offering because “leaven” in the Word of God is what Jesus refers to as “erroneous teaching.”
Matthew 16:12 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast (leaven) of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast (leaven) used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
The “leaven” of the Pharisees was the doctrine of legalism, and for the Sadducees, it was the doctrine of humanism. The Pharisees bound people up through teaching rules and regulations, and the Sadducees dismissed the supernatural, by explaining everything away using reasoning and science.
Even today, Christians in churches are bound up because of these two erroneous teachings. They dismiss the Holy Spirit and reduce Christianity to a world of self-help and following rules. They dismiss the Holy Spirit’s power, His gifts and possess a faith that cannot believe beyond what is humanly possible.
What God is saying to Moses and what Jesus is saying to you, is to take care that you don’t mix erroneous teaching of ‘religion’ or the ‘world,' with the Word of God, because it will cause you to become unfruitful for God and deceived within yourself.
Jesus is the key – Just look to His life and what He did. He healed people, He forgave people, He loved people, He cast out demons by the power of God. Whatever Jesus did 2000 years ago, He does now. So Jesus is the standard we hold onto, and He is the grace and truth of the Word.
Receiving the unleavened truth of God’s Word – not watered down by religion, tradition, legalism, humanism, or faithless experiences – is important because the Holy Spirit acts upon and bears witness to the Truth (John 16:33). The gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12) flow in response to the teaching of the Truth of God’s Word. If it is leavened with opinions, personal views or experiences that are religious or worldly, you won’t see the power of the Holy Spirit evident.
Submit yourself to God’s Word and allow the anointing of God’s Spirit to break down any “leaven” in your life. It requires a humble spirit that willingly submits one’s views and belief systems to God, allowing the Truth and Grace of His Word to transform you.
