Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Jesus is teaching you how to overcome “worry” here. He is not telling you to completely disregard the future – like forget all your planning, preparations and strategies and just to live life one day at a time and take each day as it comes. No, you need to plan for the future, budget, make reservations – but don’t worry, wondering whether bad things might happen or not.
God does not want you to worry about things because He gives you all the help that you need for today through His daily grace! And when tomorrow comes, you will have new grace to get you through that new day also.
This is called daily grace. This was God’s principle in the Old Testament.
When the children of Israel were in the wilderness (in between Egypt and the Promised Land), God gave them fresh manna daily. (Exodus 16:13-16, 31) They did not have to worry about tomorrow because when tomorrow came, there was new fresh manna.
And it is the same with God’s daily grace.
Carry this perspective that every new day, God gives you fresh grace for this new day! It is new grace, it’s a different grace than what you had yesterday. Today it is grace that is going to help you deal with what you have to deal with today. Yesterday you knew a situation was coming - and today it is now here – but so is the fresh, new grace of God to help you with that situation!
When you believe God is giving you fresh grace every day, you don’t need to worry about“how am I going to pay next year's rental increase”, or “how am I going to fund my child’s university”, or “where will I be in two years' time?”. Do whatever is necessary now to plan for your future – budget, save, be prudent. But even if that budget and savings plan will not adequately fund the forecasts of the future, don’t worry! As each new day comes, so does God’s daily grace and you will see the provision and the power of God also coming with every new day. You will see any shortfalls in your forecasts being provided for, day by day!
This is how the Lord wants you to live. Stress-free. Worry-free. Fear-free!
When King Jehoshaphat was coming under attack by several armies, God told him“Do not be afraid nor dismayed…for the battle is not yours, but God’s…” (2 Chronicles 20:15-17)
When the next morning came, King Jehoshaphat saw how God caused confusion in the enemies’ camps.
And it is the same for you as each new day brings fresh daily grace. You might see a problem looming, tomorrow, next week, next year – but do not worry. Look to the Lord and know that His fresh daily grace will be there for you!
