EXPERIENCING GOD'S PEACE

Philippians 4:7 (LB) If you do these things, you will experience the peace of God, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts quiet and your hearts at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.

We are living in a world where personal stress is at near record levels – the only time stress has been higher in the western world was during WWII. In many countries around the world, suicide has overtaken car crashes as the #1 injury related cause of death.

Globally, the seven highest causes of stress are:

1. Job  2. Money  3. Health  4. Relationships  5. Poor diet  6. Media overload  
7. Lack of sleep

The irony today is people are working harder and harder to earn more, thinking it will improve their life when in reality, it only seems to increase stress.

Paul says if you “do these things” –> you will experience the peace of God. Paul promises two things God’s peace brings:

1. A quiet mind; and
2. A heart at rest.

God promises more peace and less stress. Now this peace of God is a peace that is “more wonderful than the human mind can understand.”

In other words: It cannot be manufactured by you. It is not related to how much you earn, how often you meet your yoga therapist or how many massages you have!

People think if I earn more, I can:

  • Live somewhere that is more peaceful and quiet
  • Buy things that bring me greater comfort and convenience
  • Go on nice holidays to get away from all the noise and busyness of life

Now there is nothing wrong with these things and I hope that you have the opportunity to have all of these, but these will not bring you the peace that God promises and the kind of peace that you need.

So let’s look at what those things are that will bring you the peace of God. Paul says in verse 7 “If you do these things, you will experience the peace of God…”

Those things are listed in verse 6:

Never worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and thank Him for all he has done. (NLT)

1. Never worry about anything
2. Pray about everything
3. Thank God in all things

The truth is, these three things always go hand in hand. The only way you can achieve a worry free life is through prayer and thanksgiving. They will inoculate worry from the heart.

Become a person who prays about everything, on a daily basis. Carry a heart of thanksgiving, and you will not only feel worry dissolving from your heart, but this peace of God will replace it!
