GOD YOUR HELP

Psalm 63:7 Because you have been my help, therefore in the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.

When it comes to the Help of the Lord, often we think we need to do something in order to be deserving of His help.

But the truth is the opposite. It’s when you stop trying to be deserving, that’s when you will see the Lord’s help coming through every time.

This is called the grace of God. Grace is the underserved, unearned, unmerited favor of the Lord.

Over the years I’ve had many people ask me for prayer about a situation they have found themselves in. As I talk through the situation a little, it doesn’t take too long to realise that the mess the person is in is often their own doing. They will even say “I’m not sure God will answer my prayer right now because I’ve gotten myself into this mess”. It’s as though they think they have to get themselves out of it, and then they can pray to God.

That defeats the purpose of prayer.

The heart of God is: When we actually deserve the punishment and not the blessing, that's when we are most positioned to receive the Lord’s grace!

When we stop trying to be deserving of God’s help, that’s when we find God moving to be our Saviour – our Helper, Redeemer, Healer, and Provider.

Many people have been raised on a diet of “God helps those who help themselves”. It sounds nice and catchy doesn’t it – but it’s simply not true.

God does not help those who help themselves – He helps those who cannot help themselves. He helps the helpless; He helps those who are dependent upon Him; He helps those who look to Him as the only true source of help to their problem!

  • You might have wasted your years at school or university, God is there to help you.

  • You might have lost your job through your own doing, God is there to help you.

  • You might have been careless with money, possessions, resources, God is there to help you.

  • You might have ruined past relationships, God is there to help you.

  • You might have struggles with temptations and addictions through a carefree lifestyle, God is there to help you.

If you just come before the Lord, acknowledge that you need His grace (dependency) and believe in Him (faith), you will see His unending mercies, coming in wave after wave into your life!

God is waiting for you to come before Him with a surrendered heart that says, “I’m here to be fully dependent on your help”.

When we realise we can do nothing by ourselves (John 15:5) – that’s when we can actually do all things through Christ who strengthens us! (Philippians 4:13)
